So imagine what happens when he learns that his dear Mary actually is an heiress and what happens when she finds out about his true motives. Of course, I have to say that I prefer when the rogue is a hero in disguise and when he rebels for a reason not just to rebel to have more fun …but I digress! I was afraid of hating Jack, after all he was a fortune hunter, but the reviews I read pictured him as a cruel man.

She is a heartbreaking character, so realistic in her complete lack of self esteem Lady Mary Haviland is a 29 year old spinster, who considers herself comfortably on the shelf. From the beginning of the book through somewhere towards the end Jack acts like the fortune hunter we know he is, he doesn’t do anything to show us he is changed so it wasn’t easy for me to like him.
In the meantime, this heroine, secure in her own lack of appeal to the opposite sex, is able to converse openly and artlessly with all those boys your mama told you were only after one thing. Further crimes of miscommunication ensue followed by bouts of truly reprehensible behavior that would have many a modern day man becoming quite familiar with his living room couch apparently, we have lost our appreciation for rakes somewhere along the way, ladies and, another suitably fun, though not, to be fair, spectacular, novel takes its due course.
Your stellar review has made me rethink that! Its a nice story about two people afraid to trust and love, but they get around this pretty quickly. The ballrooms of London and the rugged cliffs and coves of the South Devon coast come alive in this poignant tale of the healing power of love.
They make out a lot and catch feelings before their secrets eventually destroy their happiness because this is a romance novel. It would be interesting to see how they come up with the idea of her advising him.
See if you have enough points for this item. I truly enjoyed this book. A Lady of Letters: When Jack proposes Mary thinks that he doesn’t know about her money so it must be their easy friendship that makes him propose so she accepts. Twice Upon a Time. She offers to help him find a bride and so the story takes off from there. I almost put this book down a couple times.
I had to read caandice one a second time to appreciate it. Two chapters to end the book and Jack was still discovering things. I am intrigued by the name.
Elements of the story are very good in isolation but together, the plot did not thrill me. I guess maybe I should have given it 2 stars, but it was nice to read a romance where it’s not “true love at first sight”. Jack’s a rake and rogue who’s on the make when a tragic accident takes most of the men in his family, leaving him with an unexpected z and even more unexpected burdens. Once Jack learns that Mary is very wealthy he realizes that he won’t need to look elsewhere for a bride.
